“This was probably one of my best races in my career

Elias Adestam drove home another heavy win in the electric NXT Gen Cup as the fledgling racing championship set up camp in Germany this weekend for its first event outside Swedish soil.

Adestam backed up his historic triumph from the premiere in Falkenberg – where he became the first driver in the world to win an electrified junior racing race – with another finish in stage two at Germany’s Oschersleben. The 17-year-old from Nacka fought back after an unfortunate qualifying , heavily marked by red flags, and took victory in the weekend’s first race in dramatic fashion with an overtaking of leading Ellis Spiezia – one of the few drivers in the field with previous experience of the Oschersleben circuit – on the very last lap. With this, Adestam now climbs to second place in the championship, which is still led by Spiezia (USA).
– This was probably one of my best races in my career, says Elias Adestam. I was unlucky in qualifying with a red flag before I could set a real time, so I had to start sixth – but we got it back in the race with a safety car that came in time for me. After the restart, I knew I had the speed, and also saved my last push-to-pass.

– It feels fantastic to back up the victory in Falkenberg with another victory here in Oschersleben, on a track where we also knew that Ellis (Spiezia) would be strong.

In the closing Race 2, where the top eight from Race 1 start in reverse order, Adestam charged hard into the first turn but spun off and fell back through the field. After a series of overtakes, he was finally able to cross the finish line in ninth.

– It was a calculated risk I was willing to take today, and which unfortunately did not go home, concludes Elias Adestam. I knew I had a chance to win that race as well if I made my way to the front quickly, but it was a bit too aggressive. In addition, there was still gravel left on the track after a previous race in a different class. I didn’t quite stop the car in time, but as I said, it was a conscious risk. It has been a good weekend again and I am very much looking forward to the rest of the season.

The NXT Gen Cup now remains in Germany, where the championship faces yet another sub-competition this coming weekend (August 5-6). Adestam and his competitors will then take on truly classic motoring ground when the historic Nürburgring is on the program. The competitions in the Eifelbergen are run together with the German racing series DTM.
