“A new chapter in my career – I’m very excited

Elias Adestam makes an exciting return to the Swedish motorsport scene in 2023 when he launches a venture into the new world-unique electric racing series NXT Gen Cup.

Adestam, who in 2022 gained valuable experience in the British Formula GB4 class, now turns home again to fight for the official Junior SM track racing title in the coming season. The 16-year-old Nacka son will be one of 18 selected drivers in the historic premiere edition of the new NXT Gen Cup, the world’s first fully electrified racing championship for juniors.

The series combines a sustainable platform with an attractive sporting regulation, where the drivers compete on equal terms in specially built touring cars of the LRT NXT1 type. The car, which is based on the street version MINI Cooper SE, develops 230 horsepower and has a top speed of 200 km/h. With a battery capacity of 30 kWh, a full-speed race of over 20 minutes is possible.

The NXT Gen Cup has been given official JSM status by the Swedish Motorsport Association and the winner of the championship is thus formally appointed Swedish junior racing champion. The last time Elias Adestam completed a full racing season in Sweden was in 2021, when he finished third overall in the national formula car class Formula Nordic.

– This is a new chapter in my career, and I am very hopeful, says Elias Adestam. I’m going from a rear-wheel-drive formula car to a front-wheel-drive, electric touring car, so it’s definitely going to be an adjustment. At the same time, I both believe and hope that the lessons from, above all, England are a sharp weapon. The NXT Gen Cup is a very exciting concept with a bright future. That it is durable is a big plus for me. I’m really looking forward to this season!

The NXT Gen Cup is run as a support class to the country’s premier racing championship STCC, which will also be electrified in 2023. The NXT Gen Cup champion will, among other things, be awarded financial support for further advancement to the STCC in 2024.

– Elias has shown his forefoot both here in Sweden but also internationally away in England, and therefore it feels extra fun that he chooses our platform for his continued career, says Fredrik Lestrup, founder of NXT Gen Cup. Our goal is for there to be international status in our championship, and a driver like Elias contributes to that. He has a solid Formula Car background, which is always extremely valuable, and I’m sure he’ll really add color to this season and be in the fight all the way.

The historic first season of the NXT Gen Cup includes a total of six sub-competitions, premiering in Falkenberg on July 8-9. The final will be held in October at an as yet unnamed venue.

The calendar also includes an exhibition event, which does not count towards the championship, at the new Helsingborg City Race in August.
